Cycling in the volcano area and watching an exciting stage finish in Super-Besse

Today was a pretty busy day for the two Custom Getaways groups on our trips which are running in parallel in the Massif Central. Indeed, we started with a 70 kilometer long ride in a very nice and green scenery around Clermont-Ferrand before getting back in our mini-vans with exclusive stage course access to drive on to the finish.

During the ride, the rain came by and we thus had to make sure to dress correctly for those weather circumstances. This didn't however keep us from climbing the Col de la Croix Saint-Robert which was exclusively accessible for us and other riders but not for other traffic.

At the stage finish we had access to the Izoard VIP area in Super-Besse where we saw the very exciting stage finish which finally turned out to be a lucky day stage finish for Rui Costa (Movistar Team) who managed to stay ahead of Philippe Gilbert (Omega Pharma-Lotto) despite a late attack of the Belgian rider.

Crossing the finish line in Redon

Today, the group of Custom Getaways clients in the first trip in the Tour de France 2011 got to cross the finish line in Redon after having done the last part of the official race route.

Escorted by an official car we got to cross the finish line only a few hours before the riders did and we also got to climb on the podium while the official hymn of the Tour de France was playing. Not much later we got to see Tyler Farrar (Team Garmin-Cervélo) who beat Romain Feillu (Vacansoleil-DCM Pro Cycling Team) in the sprint !

You can see a video of the last kilometer of how we crossed the finish line below, completely mapped out, thanks to KinoMap!

Finish viewing on the Mont des Alouettes

After having done the first 65 kilometers by bike on Friday, Custom Getaways' customers did the rest of the first stage between Barre-de-Monts/Passage du Gois et Mont des Alouettes (Les Herbiers) today. A bit before the finish, we got off our bikes to let the bus take us to the finish area.

Once we arrived there we could go into the Izoard VIP area at the finish, from where we could see Philippe Gilbert win the stage. We knew he was strong and he proved it again today, right in front of our eyes.

This was a wonderful opportunity to see this stage win, especially because due to the final uphill part and the several other short climbs just before it, the stage didn't end in a bunch sprint.

If you'd like to see some photos of the day, taken from the Izoard VIP area, check out the photos of the stage finish on Mont des Alouettes here.

Tour de France 2011 team presentation

This afternoon, the 22 teams of the Tour de France 2011 got presented in the Puy du Fou amusement park.
In this Viking like area, the teams got on stage all in a different way, some in carriages and some like Thor Hushovd as a real gladiator, worshiped by his team mates!

Custom Getaways was there with its first customers who got to see all 22 teams getting presented, from the local team Europcar up to the Saxo Bank-Sungard team of big favourite for the general classification, Alberto Contador.

The Polka Dot Alps trip was a great success!

As you probably noticed there haven't been any updates to this blog since a few days now ... Indeed, we're making long days to make sure we get the best bike rides and VIP access possible and it's thus a bit difficult to keep you posted here.

Today was a rest day and while some of us were climbing the Col du Tourmalet in the rain, another part of the group was visiting Pau where the teams were located during this rest day!

We got off on the previous rest day, so I'll now try to update you on what's happened in the mean time.

On July 13th we went up the Col de la Madeleine by bike, to get to our viewing location at 9 kilometers from the top of that "hors category" climb. Some of us went up the 25.5 kilometers to the top before going back down to the viewing location while others just stopped there. For another part of the group, this was "D-day" and they thus continued until the finish line in Saint-Jean-de-Maurienne where they got the chance to cross that line just a few hours before the professional riders and climb up the podium where the stage winner stood later on!
From our viewing location we first saw the advertising caravan come by and since we were on the Col de la Madeleine, we thought this was perfect to get some "Madeleines" (some sort of cake) delivered directly by St Michel to where we were standing. After the advertising caravan got by we enjoyed our lunch up there before seeing the leading group including Luis Léon Sanchez (Caisse d'Epargne) and Damiano Cunego (Lampre-Farnese Vini) followed by several other groups and the "grupetto".

Bastille Day reserved another surprise for us: first the climb of the Col d'Ornon, but more importantly ... the climb of the Alpe d'Huez with its famous 21 switchbacks! Once we got on top of this big one, we jumped in our vans to get to the stage finish in Gap where we got to see the stage finish from the Izoard VIP area and thus Sergio Paulinho (Team Radioshack) outsprinting Vasil Kyryienka of the Caisse d'Epargne team. The glass of champagne after the stage finish made our day complete!

> Other pictures of this day are available here!

The forelast day of the Polka Dot Alps trip was yet another special day: we got to cross the finish line before getting up the podium while the official music of the Tour de France was playing just hours before Mark Cavendish raised his hands crossing the finish line. We saw that from the technical and media area which was our preferred viewing location after crossing the line ... Before that happened, we also got the chance to meet up with Robbie Ventura and Frankie Andreu at the Versus mobile broadcasting unit!

On July 16th the Polka Dot Alps trip ended with a visit of Bourg-de-Péage where the stage start took place. In between our visits to the "Village Départ" (the VIP village at the start of each Tour de France stage), we got to see the riders getting off their buses heading to the signature podium where they signed in one by one before the start of the stage. That was the perfect occasion to get some signatures and pictures with the riders taken ... it was therefore no surprise that the goodbyes early in the afternoon were difficult since this trip ended here ...
Just before we left, we also got to meet with a sportsman we don't see that often in the Tour de France ... Sébastien Chabal, one of the most famous French rugby players!

What's the use of a rest day? Definitely not to get some rest for us ...

As you know, last Monday was the first rest day of the 2010 Tour de France.

We used this occasion to go and discover the city of Annecy, where the final time trial of the 2009 Tour de France took place. A part of the group took their bikes from our hotel towards Annecy for about 70 kilometers, while the other part did an easier ride ... around the lake of Annecy. However, since this was the stage route of last year's time trial, you might remember there are some climbs in it when going backwards to Annecy, so it was a nice and challenging ride anyway!

After our rides we went to discover the city of Annecy, strawling around the lake and in the city with its Venice like looks ...
